Herkimer Diamond Mines

The Herkimer Diamond Mines welcomes over 150,000 visitors of all ages each year, including vacationing families, hobbyists, and rockhounds alike. Prospect for your very own world-famous Herkimer Diamonds in three above ground surface mines. These beautiful double-terminated quartz crystal gemstones were formed in Herkimer County nearly 500 million years ago. Admission includes all day prospecting and use of a hammer. Herkimer Diamonds were recently made even more famous when Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, wore a pair of Herkimer Diamond stud earrings. These magnificent gems have also been featured on QVC Japan. Herkimer Diamond Mines operates seasonally from April through November, and is located 8 minutes from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast.

Erie Canal Cruises

erie canal cruisesTake a journey through history on the calm waters of the Erie Canal while enjoying the spectacular scenery of New York’s beautiful Mohawk Valley. Join Captain Jerry and his crew on an incredibly fun, narrated, 90-minute sightseeing cruise, and learn a bit of history about the Erie Canal along the way. The thrill of the voyage is being raised and lowered over 20 feet in Lock 18 at Jacksonburg, one of the last remaining locks operating with original 100+ year old equipment. Evening and specialty cruises are also offered. Daily cruises depart from the Gems Along the Mohawk complex, a 4-minute drive from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast. Erie Canal Cruises operates seasonally from May through October.

Howe Caverns

howe cavernsIf you’re looking for a fun and affordable day trip for the entire family, this is the attraction for you. Every tour of Howe Caverns starts with a 156-foot descent below the earth’s surface. From there you can experience a variety of tours exploring a six million-year-old cave. You’ll travel through limestone corridors, cavernous galleries, and under massive boulders until you reach a subterranean riverbed. You’ll be in awe of the strange formations and dripping stalactites you discover. The cave is open year-round, with tours offered Friday through Sunday. You can also enjoy an above ground Adventure Park featuring a Zip line, Ropes Course, Rock Wall and more. The Adventure Park is open seasonally, from late spring to early fall. Howe Caverns is a 55-minute drive from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast.
