Guest Safety

At Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast, your safety and comfort are our top priorities. This page outlines the important safety measures in place at our historic property. Learn how we prioritize your well-being, from fire safety guidelines to emergency procedures, so you can relax and enjoy your stay with peace of mind.

Allergy Awareness

We strive to create a welcoming environment at Grand Colonial for all our guests. If you have specific allergies to foods, pets, cleaning products, or fragrances, please let us know in advance. We’ll do our best to accommodate your needs.

Please be aware that we serve a variety of foods and allow dogs on the property. While we maintain clean, hardwood floors and rigorous cleaning practices to minimize allergens, we cannot guarantee an entirely allergen-free space. For this reason, we recommend that guests with severe allergies consider alternative accommodations.

Dog-Friendly Advisory

Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast is a dog-friendly establishment. While we strive to maintain a clean and comfortable environment for all guests, we kindly ask that you consider alternative accommodations if you have severe pet allergies or sensitivities.

COVID-Specific Protocols

We have implemented enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols that exceed CDC guidelines. This includes increased cleaning frequency, regular disinfection of high-touch surfaces, and the availability of sanitation stations with hand sanitizer and/or sanitizing wipes.

Drinking Water Safety Notice

The Village of Herkimer, which supplies our tap water, has identified elevated lead levels in its public water system.

Here’s what we’re doing:

  • Our specific water line is not made of lead, reducing the risk of lead contamination at our property.
  • We routinely flush our taps to minimize any potential lead from sitting water.

What you can do:
To further reduce any potential exposure, we recommend running the cold water for 30 seconds before using it for drinking or cooking, especially if the tap hasn’t been used for several hours.

For more information:
If you have any questions or concerns about lead exposure, please don’t hesitate to ask us.  Here’s a link to the New York State Department of Health website with additional information:

No Elevator Notice

Please note that all guest rooms are located on the second floor. Access to the second floor is by stairs only, as we do not have an elevator.

Emergency Evacuation Notice

A portable escape ladder is located at the end of the second-floor hallway.

Emergency Services Notification

In case of emergency, please call 9-1-1 immediately.

Falling Snow and Ice Warning

To ensure your safety, please avoid walking near the rooflines during the winter months. Falling snow and ice can pose a risk of injury or property damage.

Fire Safety Notice

For your safety, we have installed smoke detectors in all guest rooms and common areas. Fire extinguishers are strategically placed throughout the property. Exits are clearly marked.

Narrow Driveway Warning

Please drive cautiously when entering and exiting the parking lot. The narrow space between the house and fence may pose a risk of vehicle damage.

Radiator Heating Warning

The historic Grand House, built in the late 1800s, uses radiators for primary heating. These radiators can become very hot during operation. To avoid burns, please keep children and pets away from the radiators.

Video Surveillance Notice

For your safety and security, we use visible video surveillance cameras on our property. We respect your privacy and do not use surveillance cameras in guest rooms or other private areas. Please contact us if you have any concerns.
