Fenimore Art Museum

Featuring everchanging exhibitions of art and culture, tours, book signings, lectures, and gorgeous terrace gardens with panoramic views of Otsego Lake, the Fenimore Art Museum is not to be missed. The museum collection is housed in an impressive neo-Georgian structure built in the 1930s on the site of James Fenimore Cooper’s early 19th century farmhouse. While you’re there, be sure to visit the Fenimore Museum Shop for elegant jewelry from regional artists, and books and gifts related to fine art, folk art, and the history of New York State. The Fenimore Café offers a variety of homestyle soups, sandwiches, desserts, and hot and cold beverages, including wine and locally brewed beer. Located in Cooperstown, Fenimore Art Museum is a 35-minute drive from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast.

Herkimer Home

Tour the Georgian-style home of Brigadier General Nicholas Herkimer, who became an American Revolutionary War hero during the Battle of Oriskany in 1777. Visitors will appreciate the unspoiled landscape, including the Herkimer family burial ground, which is remarkably unchanged from the 18th century. Suitable for all ages, the historic site also features a visitor center with exhibits and audio tour, guided tours, educational displays, costumed re-enactments, gift shop, picnic area and bird watching area. The site grounds may be enjoyed year-round from dawn to dusk. Guided tours are available on limited days from late May to early September. Admission is usually less than $5 for adults and free for children 12 years and under. Day use and picnicking are free for all.

Glimmerglass Festival

The Glimmerglass Festival is an internationally-acclaimed summer opera and musical theater festival. This one-of-a kind Cooperstown destination features classic performances, modern renditions, and renowned artists in a beautiful lakeside setting. If you are a music lover and appreciate world-class performing arts, then Glimmer Glass Festival is not to be missed. Cooperstown inns fill up fast and can be a bit pricey, especially on summer weekends, when most Glimmerglass performances take place. Haunted History Trail

Explore part of the Haunted History Trail of New York State, a collection of over 65 creepy, spooky, and haunted locations spanning over 400 miles across the state. The year-round trail invites the paranormal-curious to participate in guided ghost tours and special events. The local portion of the trail includes a handful of haunted spots and spooky museums, each with their fair share of ghost stories. Local hauntings include Shoppes at the Finish Line, Herkimer Home State Historic Park, Union Station, Hyde Hall, National Baseball Hall of Fame, Old Stone Fort Museum and Dr. Best House & Medical Museum. Some locations are open daily, while some are by appointment only. The various stops mentioned above are between a 15-minute and 60-minute drive from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast.

Fort Stanwix National Monument

Discover the rich history of Fort Stanwix National Monument, located in the heart of Rome, New York, and step back in time to experience the daily life of soldiers and civilians during the Revolutionary War. Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival

Held annually in September, the Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival celebrates all things garlic and offers a wide range of garlic-themed foods and products to try. From garlic-infused olive oils to garlic-flavored popcorn, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. You’ll also find a variety of food trucks and booths offering delicious garlic-themed dishes, like garlic knots, garlic burgers, and even garlic ice cream! In addition to the food, there’s live music, cooking demonstrations, and various craft vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry to pottery. It’s a great event for the whole family and a unique way to experience the charming town of Little Falls.  Admission is $5 per individual or $15 per family.  The Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival is a 12-minute drive from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast.

Little Falls Cheese Festival

The Little Falls Cheese Festival is New York State’s premier annual gathering of cheesemakers.  This event is a cheese-lovers paradise featuring an impressive selection of over 120 cheeses, locally made artisanal foods, and beverages from across the region.   In addition to the cheese, there are also food trucks and booths offering other delicious bites to enjoy.  Live music, cooking demonstrations, and kids’ activities make this festival a fun and memorable experience for all ages.  Take advantage of this opportunity to indulge in some of the region’s best cheeses!  The 2024 Little Falls Cheese Festival will be held on October 5th, from 10 am to 5 pm on Main Street in Little Falls, NY, a 12-minute drive from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast.

Dolgeville Violet Festival

The annual Violet Festival in Dolgeville, NY, celebrates the town’s history and features many fun activities for the whole family. Visitors can enjoy live music, over 75 craft vendors, delicious food, and, of course, the beautiful violets the town is known for. The festival also includes a parade, a car show, a 5K race, and a fireworks display, making it an unforgettable experience. The Dolgeville Violet Festival happens every year on the second Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of June and is a 20-minute drive from Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast.
