Glimmerglass Festival 2026: What to Know Before You Visit
The 2026 Glimmerglass Festival opens July 10, and behind the scenes the company is in full preview mode — sets going up, costumes fitted, Resident Artists arriving on campus, and the slate of mainstage productions taking shape. For our guests planning a summer visit to Central New York, here’s a look at what’s in store for the 2026 season, plus the new community events broadening the appeal beyond opera-purists this year.
The 2026 mainstage productions
Four mainstage productions plus a youth opera anchor the season:
- Madame Butterfly — Puccini’s classic, with the original production direction from Francesca Zambello. Maestro Joseph Colaneri conducts. The “stunning Buddha set piece” is already taking shape in the theater.
- Oklahoma! — the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, also directed by Francesca Zambello, conducted by James Lowe.
- Così fan tutte — Mozart’s comic opera, directed by Eric Einhorn in a playful college-campus setting (yes, there’s a foosball machine on stage). Joseph Colaneri also conducts this one.
- Fellow Travelers — rounding out the four mainstage productions.
- Robin Hood — the season’s youth opera; the Paints Department is currently building a forest backdrop for it.
New for 2026: community events worth planning around
Glimmerglass has expanded its programming this season with several events that appeal beyond the core opera audience. A few highlights:
Festival Flicks — free outdoor movie nights
Free movies on the Festival Lawn:
- National Treasure — June 5, 8:00 pm
- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves — June 26, 8:00 pm
Sign-ups appreciated but not required. A perfect early-summer outing if you’re staying with us before the mainstage season opens.
Cooperstown Trolley to the Festival
This is a new and welcome addition: a trolley service from downtown Cooperstown to the Festival campus before and after performances of Oklahoma!, Madame Butterfly, Così, and Fellow Travelers. Drive into Cooperstown, park downtown, ride the trolley up the lake to the theater, and skip the on-campus parking entirely. Full dates and stops to be announced; check the Glimmerglass website close to your visit.
Glimmerglass After Hours — August 14
A festival party that runs after the curtain — silent disco, food trucks, bonfires, and the chance to mingle with Festival artists. 10:30 pm, free to attend, cash bar. If you’re staying with us August 14 weekend, this is the kind of late-night event that makes the Festival feel different than a typical concert outing.
Summer Sendoff Picnic — August 15
A relaxed afternoon on the lawn to close out the season: meals from Brooks’ House of BBQ, lawn games, and Festival friends. 3:30 pm, $20 tickets. The natural anchor for the last weekend of August at Glimmerglass.
Other ongoing programs
- Lyrics on the Lawn — Resident Artists performing numbers from the Great American Songbook on the Festival Lawn. Free, dates announced throughout the season.
- Talking Opera at the Fenimore Art Museum — the Glimmerglass Guild’s discussion series. The June 3 session features Conductor James Lowe on Oklahoma!
- Backstage Tours and Changeover Talks on double-performance Saturdays — get to see the stage transformation between productions.
- Preview Talks — engaging pre-show conversations with Festival music staff one hour before every mainstage performance.
Planning your Glimmerglass visit from Grand Colonial
Glimmerglass sits at the north end of Otsego Lake near Cooperstown — about a 35-minute drive from the inn. Most of our Glimmerglass guests pair an evening performance with a Cooperstown day, then return to a quieter Herkimer base for the night. Our Cooperstown weekend itinerary walks through the full Friday-to-Sunday plan we typically recommend.
If you want to take advantage of the new Cooperstown Trolley, the math gets even better: drive into downtown Cooperstown (35 minutes from us), park, ride the trolley up the lake to the theater, and skip the post-show parking lot crawl entirely. You’re back at the inn for breakfast.
For more on what’s happening in Central New York throughout the summer Glimmerglass run, see our July 2026 guide and August 2026 guide. Glimmerglass is a recurring anchor in both.
Booking advice
Glimmerglass weekends are some of our busiest non-Hall-of-Fame weekends at the inn. Friday and Saturday performances especially tend to fill our rooms quickly once tickets are released. If you have a specific performance in mind, our advice is the same we give all summer guests: book direct as early as you can. You get our lowest rate plus the $10/night return-guest discount, and the most flexibility on dates and special requests.
And if you’re not sure yet — see what else is on at Glimmerglass and around the region in our seasonal events guide.
Stay at Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast
Make this part of a perfect Central New York getaway. Our four en-suite rooms in historic Herkimer offer a quiet base for exploring the Mohawk Valley, Cooperstown, the Erie Canalway Trail, and the Adirondacks.
