National Baseball Hall of Fame East-West Classic Weekend
Honoring and Celebrating the History of Black Baseball
Are you a fan of baseball? Have you ever wanted to learn more about the history of Black baseball? Then you won’t want to miss the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s upcoming event, “Celebrating the History of Black Baseball” on May 25th, 2024, at Doubleday Field!
This event is the perfect opportunity to see some of the greatest former big leaguers in action, with Ken Griffey Jr. and Ozzie Smith among the Hall of Famers who will serve as the East and West teams’ managers and coaches. The game will feature more than two dozen former big leaguers and will be fueled by assistance from Major League Baseball. It is scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend and will take the place of the Hall of Fame Classic in 2024.
The Hall of Fame East-West Classic is part of a weekend-long celebration as the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum opens its new exhibit, The Souls of the Game: Voices of Black Baseball. Located on the Museum’s second floor in the Yawkey Gallery, the exhibit will tell the story of Black baseball through the voices of the men and women who broke barriers and made history on and off the field.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The weekend will pay tribute to the heroes of Black baseball who showcased their talents for years in the annual Negro Leagues All-Star Game. The East-West All-Star Game debuted in 1933 at Chicago’s Comiskey Park and was played annually through 1962, including several years that featured multiple games. Several future Hall of Famers starred in the game throughout the years, including Cool Papa Bell, Ray Brown, Andy Cooper, Leon Day, Josh Gibson, Buck Leonard, Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, and Willie Wells.
