The Glimmerglass Festival opens each summer at the Alice Busch Opera Theater, on the north end of Otsego Lake near Cooperstown. It’s one of the country’s most respected summer opera festivals, drawing audiences from across the Northeast. Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast is a 30-minute drive north of the festival grounds, in historic Herkimer, NY, and we’ve welcomed Glimmerglass audiences for years.
Why Grand Colonial works for Glimmerglass weekends
Cooperstown lodging fills early and prices climb during festival weeks. A 30-minute drive north gets you a quieter, more comfortable historic home at a rate that doesn’t surge, plus a full hot breakfast included. Most of our Glimmerglass guests stay 2 to 4 nights, pairing one or two performances with a Cooperstown day, and returning each night to Herkimer to actually rest.
Our four en-suite guest rooms each have a king or queen bed, private bathroom, individual climate control, and a full breakfast included. Browse our rooms or book direct for the lowest rate plus a $10/night return-guest discount.
How far is Grand Colonial from the Glimmerglass Festival?
- Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast: 112 W German Street, Herkimer, NY 13350
- Alice Busch Opera Theater (Glimmerglass venue): 7300 State Highway 80, Cooperstown, NY 13326
- Drive time: about 30 minutes south on NY-28

The drive south on NY-28 runs through the Mohawk Valley and along Otsego Lake’s western shore. It’s scenic, two-lane, low-traffic, a nice unwinding stretch after a long performance.
Planning a Glimmerglass weekend
- Performance schedule: the festival runs roughly mid-June through mid-August, with mainstage productions typically performed Friday-Sunday plus select weekdays.
- Pre-show timing: matinees usually start at 1:30 PM, evening performances at 7:30 PM. We arrange breakfast time at check-in so you’ve got plenty of margin to get to your performance unhurried.
- Multi-night stays: most Glimmerglass guests stay 2 to 4 nights, which lets you see two productions plus enjoy a Cooperstown day (Hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum, Farmers’ Museum, the Brewery Ommegang tasting room, or a walk around the lake).
- Late return after evening shows: evening performances run until about 10:30 PM, putting you back in Herkimer around 11 PM. We leave a quiet entry path lit.

What to expect at Glimmerglass
Glimmerglass is a smaller, more intimate festival than the Met or Santa Fe, about 920 seats per performance, which means dressing is somewhere between casual and smart-casual rather than formal evening wear. The grounds open about 90 minutes before each performance, with picnic areas, a wine bar, and pre-show talks with the artistic team. Many audience members make an event of it: arrive early, picnic on the lawn, attend the talk, then watch the show.
Cooperstown day-trip add-ons
Since you’re already coming to the area, most Glimmerglass guests pair their festival visit with at least one Cooperstown day. See our Cooperstown weekend itinerary for the full plan, or browse our things to do near Grand Colonial page for the area’s other attractions.
Best months for a Glimmerglass weekend
- Late June: opening weekend, often features the season’s signature production. Cooler weather, smaller crowds.
- July: peak season. Hot afternoons (matinees can be warm in the theater), plan accordingly.
- Early to mid-August: closing weekends. Often the best chance for last-minute tickets, especially mid-week performances.
