Herkimer is a small historic village in New York’s Mohawk Valley. While many travelers come for big-ticket regional attractions like the Herkimer Diamond Mines and Cooperstown, there are real things to do in Herkimer NY itself that are worth your time on a slow morning, a rainy afternoon, or the in-between hours of a longer trip.
Things to do in Herkimer NY proper
The historic Herkimer County complex
The Herkimer County Historical Society maintains a remarkable cluster of 19th-century buildings at the village core. The 1834 stone jail (where Chester Gillette was held before his 1908 conviction in the case that inspired Theodore Dreiser’s An American Tragedy) is open seasonally for tours. The 1873 county courthouse adjacent to it is itself a working museum of upstate New York legal history.
Walk the Erie Canalway Trail
The Erie Canalway Trail runs right through Herkimer. From Grand Colonial it’s a 5-minute walk to the trail. A short walk or bike ride east or west along the canal makes a peaceful early evening, with old lock houses and historic markers along the way. See our Erie Canalway lodging guide for the full canal-traveler overview.
Eat well in the village
Herkimer has a small but real restaurant scene, a couple of Italian places that have been institutions for decades, a few newer spots, a great pizza option. We keep current recommendations on our restaurants page (currently a guest-only resource, mention it at check-in and we’ll point you at what’s worth your time).
Browse the Main Street shops
Walk Main Street and German Street for a small-town downtown experience. Independent shops, the public library in a historic building, and the village center are all walkable from Grand Colonial.
