Last Call at Glimmerglass: The 2026 Festival Season Closes August 17

The 2026 Glimmerglass Festival season wraps up on August 17, and the final two weeks are shaping up to be the best time all summer to go. The reviews are in, the productions have settled into their stride, and the Festival is packing its last stretch with youth opera, intimate Pavilion concerts, and a five-performance closing weekend. If you have been meaning to make the trip to Cooperstown for an evening (or afternoon) at the Alice Busch Opera Theater, this is your window — and Grand Colonial is about a 30-minute drive from the Festival campus, making Herkimer an easy home base.

The four mainstage productions, in their final performances

All four of this season’s mainstage productions have earned enthusiastic notices from critics, and each has only a handful of dates left (matinees noted):

• Oklahoma! — Rodgers & Hammerstein’s classic, widely praised for its cast and staging. Remaining: August 6, 8 (matinee), 13, and 15.
• Così fan tutte — Mozart’s comedy, conducted by Maestro Joseph Colaneri. Remaining: August 9 (matinee), 11 (matinee), and 14.
• Madame Butterfly — Puccini’s tragedy with Eri Nakamura in a performance critics have called deeply moving. Remaining: August 3 (matinee), 8, 15 (matinee), and 17 (matinee).
• Fellow Travelers — Gregory Spears’ acclaimed contemporary opera. Remaining: August 4 (matinee), 7, 10 (matinee), and 16 (matinee).

Robin Hood: a one-hour opera made for families

Traveling with kids — or opera-curious but not ready for a three-hour commitment? The Festival’s Youth Opera production of Robin Hood, by Ben Moore and Kelley Rourke, runs August 2, 4, and 7. It is a family-friendly, one-hour telling of the classic tale, performed by the Festival’s Youth Chorus alongside members of the Resident Artists Program. Tickets are just $20 — and free for kids 12 and under. For families staying with us on a Cooperstown trip, it is one of the best-value cultural outings of the entire summer.

Two intimate concerts in the Pavilion

Beyond the mainstage, the Festival’s smaller Pavilion venue hosts two staged song-cycle presentations in the final weeks:

• The Road Home: Schubert’s Winterreise — Monday, August 3 at 4:30 p.m. Artist-in-Residence Kevin Burdette and Artistic & General Director Rob Ainsley frame Schubert’s great song cycle with companion pieces performed by the 2026 Resident Artists.
• Vignettes: Ellis Island — Thursday, August 6 and 13 at 5:00 p.m. Alan Louis Smith’s song cycle draws on real stories of early 20th-century immigrants who passed through Ellis Island, performed as a staged concert by the Resident Artists.

Closing Weekend: August 13–17

The Festival closes the season with a packed final weekend: five mainstage performances, two catered meals, and a late-night soirée. If you want the full Glimmerglass experience condensed into one trip, this is it — and it doubles as a perfect end-of-summer getaway. Rooms in the area fill for closing weekend, so if you are thinking about it, book your stay sooner rather than later.

A little history, and a look at 2027

Glimmerglass began in 1975 with four performances of La bohème in the auditorium of the Cooperstown Central School. This summer that same auditorium got an unexpected encore: when wildfire smoke affected air quality on July 18, the Festival moved that evening’s Oklahoma! performance back to where it all began — a full-circle night the company will be talking about for years.

Next season is already taking shape: the 2027 Festival brings Into the Woods, The Barber of Seville, Rusalka, and The Little Prince to the Alice Busch Opera Theater. Current ticket-package holders can renew through August 17 to keep their preferred seats; new packages go on sale to the public August 3.
