What is a Herkimer Diamond?

A Herkimer diamond is an exquisite quartz crystal discovered in and around Herkimer County, New York, and the Mohawk River Valley. It is known for its exceptional clarity and brightness, and it is often used in jewelry and as a collectible mineral specimen. Despite its name, a Herkimer diamond is not actually a diamond but rather a type of quartz crystal. Its unique double-terminated shape is formed from two opposing growth points that allow light to pass through the crystal unobstructed, creating a brilliant, diamond-like effect.

Six Tips for a Great Experience:

  1. Plan ahead: First things first, before visiting the Herkimer Diamond Mines, do your research. Check the weather forecast, park hours, and admission fees. The mines are subject to closure during unsafe weather conditions, such as snow, sleet, harsh rains, thunderstorms, etc.
  2. Wear comfortable clothes: The mines are located in a natural setting, so dress accordingly. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for walking on uneven terrain. Closed-toe shoes and eye protection are required to enter the mines. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
  3. Bring your own tools: The mines provide basic tools for visitors to use, but you can bring your own if you want. A rock hammer, chisel, and bucket are the most essential tools. You can also bring a screen to sift through the dirt. Tools over 12 pounds and powered equipment are not allowed.
  4. Follow the rules: The Herkimer Diamond Mines has specific rules for visitors to ensure safety and preserve the natural environment. Follow them carefully. For example, you cannot dig or collect samples outside the designated areas, and those mining for more than 1 week at a time are required to rotate to a different area weekly.
  5. Take a guided tour: If you’re new to mining, take a guided tour. The guides will provide you with useful information about the history of the mines, the geology of the area, and techniques for finding the diamonds.
  6. Have fun: Mining can be hard work, but it’s also a lot of fun. Enjoy the fresh air, beautiful scenery, and the thrill of finding your own Herkimer diamonds.

Mine for Herkimer Diamonds in the above ground mines

The above ground surface mines give you the unique opportunity to search for Herkimer diamond quartz crystals hiding in the rocks. There are a few ways to find them, but most folks like to simply use a hammer to reveal the beautiful 500-million-year-old crystals hidden inside. Everything you find is yours to keep!

If you’re looking for an easy and safe way to find Herkimer Diamonds, especially for kids, try “Scavenger Prospecting.” All you have to do is look around the piles of surface rocks until you come across something sparkly, or search the ground for loose crystals (they might be small, but they tend to be high quality). If you bring a small gardening shovel, you might also have luck finding loose crystals on or just beneath the surface of any exposed soil.

Another method you can try is the “Find and Break” method, which is where your supplied hammer comes in handy. To find crystals within exposed Dolostone, select more porous rocks to break open. The more porous the rock, the more likely you are to find a Herkimer Diamond in a crack or crevice once you break it open. You might choose to collect and leave intact whole rock specimens with visible crystals or save them later when you have access to more precise extraction tools.

Discover gemstones at the Sluice Mining Station

Sluice mining offers another exciting mining experience. Purchase a special bag and head to the Sluice Station where you can screen away the debris to discover your very own treasures. This experience is perfect for miners of all ages.

New for 2024, the owners of The Herkimer Diamond Mines have partnered with the owners of the Portofino Restaurant, and the Roser Family will be taking over all food operations at the mines. They’ll be opening up the Canteen with handmade smash burgers, deli sandwiches, and other delicious options. They’ll also be preparing food for venues happening at The Barn, the Diamond Mines’ premiere events center.

The food options don’t stop there. You can also enjoy some yummy food options at the KOA Campgrounds, including an ice cream trailer and a food truck trailer that serves liquor and small plates.

Miners’ Table restaurant will be up and running with Mother’s Day specials on May 12. So, get ready to have fun, mine, make memories and enjoy some delicious food!
