If you’re planning a trip to the Herkimer Diamond Mines, you’ll want lodging that’s close, comfortable, and built for families and mining enthusiasts. Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast is a 15-minute drive (7 miles) south of the mines, in historic downtown Herkimer, NY. It’s the closest historic B&B to the dig sites, and it’s set up specifically for the kind of trip a diamond-mining day requires.
Why stay at Grand Colonial for a Herkimer Diamond Mines visit
The mines open early and the best digging happens in the morning before the summer heat builds. Staying 15 minutes away (instead of an hour-plus drive from Utica, Cooperstown, or Albany) means you arrive fresh and finish before the heat. After a long day swinging a hammer, you’re back to a quiet, air-conditioned 1890s home with a hot shower and a private bath, not a chain hotel room two towns over.
Our four en-suite guest rooms each have a king or queen bed, private bathroom, and full breakfast included. Browse our rooms or book direct for the lowest rate plus a $10/night return-guest discount.

Plan a productive mining day
Most guests heading to the mines follow this rough schedule. We can flex around it if you need an earlier breakfast.
- Breakfast at Grand Colonial: we arrange breakfast time with each guest at check-in. See what’s on the menu. If you want to be at the mines for opening, just tell us at check-in and we’ll set breakfast accordingly.
- 9:00 AM: Mines open. First two hours are the best, before crowds and heat. Park, pay admission, grab your bucket, find a fresh spot in the dolostone.
- 9:00 AM-1:00 PM: Dig. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat.
- 1:00 PM onward: Lunch at one of our recommended local restaurants (we share the list when you check in), or head back to the inn to sort your finds.
What to bring (we provide some, you bring the rest)
- Required at the mines: closed-toe shoes (no sandals), eye protection (sold at the mines if you don’t have your own), and a hammer (rentals available at the mines for a small fee).
- Helpful from us: we can lend you a cooler and ice packs for snacks and water, plus a fresh set of towels for the post-dig cleanup. Just ask at check-in.
- Helpful from home: work gloves, knee pads or a small foam mat (you’ll be sitting on rock for hours), and bug spray.
Family-friendly
The Herkimer Diamond Mines are a hit with kids. Even very young kids can find diamonds in the surface gravel near the entrance, and older kids quickly learn to spot the telltale glints in the broken dolostone. The mines also have a museum, gem panning sluices for kids, and a gift shop. Plan for a 3-to-5-hour visit if you’ve got children with you.
Our Kingsland Room sleeps up to 3 with a rollaway mattress. For families of 4 or more, our four-room layout supports whole-house bookings. Check availability or call us at (315) 982-5004 to talk through what fits.
Save the mining season for 2026
The Herkimer Diamond Mines have a defined season (typically April through October, weather-permitting). For dates, hours, current admission pricing, and what to expect, see our full 2026 Guide to the Herkimer Diamond Mines, or visit the official mines website.
