Erie Canalway Trail Lodging in Herkimer NY

The Erie Canalway Trail runs right through Herkimer, NY, and Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast is one of the few historic B&Bs on the route that’s set up specifically for cyclists. We’re a short ride south of the trail in downtown Herkimer, a designated Bike Friendly NY lodging partner, and we’ve hosted multi-day canal trips, day-trip first-timers, weekend fall-cycling getaways, and through-cyclists riding the full 360-mile Buffalo-to-Albany trail.

Why cyclists choose Grand Colonial on the Erie Canalway Trail

Most lodging along the Erie Canalway is either a motel chain in the wrong direction or a campsite that’s hard on tired legs after 40 miles of riding. Grand Colonial sits in the middle of one of the trail’s most scenic sections (Frankfort to Little Falls), with four en-suite guest rooms, a full hot breakfast, and a quiet historic home for the kind of recovery a long ride day actually needs.

We’ve planned around the cyclist routine. Browse our rooms or book direct for the lowest rate plus a $10/night return-guest discount.

What we offer cyclists

  • Secure bike storage: we have covered, off-street storage for your bike overnight. No leaving your road bike on a fence in the rain.
  • Breakfast timed to your ride: we arrange breakfast time with each guest at check-in. Heading out at sunrise for a long ride? Just tell us and we’ll have a real breakfast ready (not a continental tray) so you’ve got the calories to ride.
  • Trail-side knowledge: we know the route, the open trail-side coffee stops, the closed bridges, the best Little Falls dinner spots, and which sections are paved vs. gravel.
  • Air-conditioned rooms with private baths: a real hot shower after a humid 50-mile day is hard to overstate.

Where Grand Colonial sits on the trail

The Erie Canalway Trail runs east-west through the Mohawk Valley along the south side of the Mohawk River. Grand Colonial is in Herkimer at 112 W German Street. The closest formal trail access point is the MOVAC building in Mohawk, a short ride south across the Mohawk River bridge.

From here, the trail goes:

  • East to Little Falls: about 8 miles, includes the dramatic Lock 17 (the highest single-chamber lift lock in the United States) and the historic Canal Place riverwalk in Little Falls.
  • West to Frankfort and Utica: about 20 miles to Utica, mostly flat and paved. Great for a half-day out-and-back.
  • Full route: the trail is part of the Empire State Trail, which connects Buffalo to Albany (and on to NYC). About 360 miles total.

For a detailed first-day-from-Grand-Colonial route, see our cycling guide for first-timers.

Planning a multi-day canal trip

Most through-cyclists splitting the 360-mile route stop in Herkimer as a logical overnight, because of the canal’s most photographable lock section (Little Falls) and because lodging gets sparse for a long stretch east of here. We typically see riders arriving in the late afternoon, eating dinner in Little Falls or downtown Herkimer, sleeping well, and heading out at 7-7:30 AM for the next leg.

For groups riding together, our four-room layout works well for a whole-house booking. See our group stays page for layout and rates, or call us at (315) 982-5004.

Best seasons for the trail

  • Spring (April-May): trail is open, cool mornings, fewer crowds. Some sections may have rain mud.
  • Summer (June-August): peak season. Hot afternoons, plan early-morning rides. Trail is full of through-cyclists.
  • Fall (September-October): our favorite. Foliage along the Mohawk River is spectacular. See our fall cycling trip guide.
  • Winter: the formal trail closes for snow. Local cyclists ride sections on fat bikes.

What to bring

  • For day-trippers: just a water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and a basic tube/patch kit. We’ll point you to a local bike shop if you need a tune-up.
  • For multi-day: minimal panniers work for our setup, since you have full room amenities here. Pack lighter than you think.
  • For groups: arrange a sag-vehicle pickup at our front door if you’re doing point-to-point. Call us a few days ahead.

Other things to do nearby

Most cyclists pair the ride with a stop at the Herkimer Diamond Mines (a 15-minute drive north, see our Herkimer Diamond Mines lodging page) or a Cooperstown side trip (30 minutes south, see our Cooperstown weekend itinerary). The full list of nearby attractions is on our things to do page.
