The summer crowds start to thin after Labor Day, the air begins to feel like fall before the leaves turn, and the calendar stays surprisingly full — a major festival in Little Falls, the last full month of diamond mining season, and prime weather on the Canalway Trail. Warm enough for cycling and lake days, cool enough for a porch evening, and quiet enough that you don’t have to plan months ahead. Here’s what to plan around.

Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival — Saturday, September 12

The biggest September event in our corner of the valley: the annual Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival takes over historic Canal Place in Little Falls on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Expect dozens of vendor stalls with heirloom garlic, herb-infused products and gourmet foods, plus live music and family activities — recent editions have drawn thousands of visitors, and vendors regularly sell out. It’s 15 minutes from our door, and festival-weekend rooms go early.

Late-Glimmerglass weekend

The Glimmerglass Festival’s opera season typically runs into the first half of September. If you’ve been meaning to catch a performance but didn’t want to fight August crowds, this is your window. Tickets are easier to come by, and the post-show drive back to the inn feels like the start of fall.

Last full month at the Herkimer Diamond Mines

The Herkimer Diamond Mines close for the season in October, which makes September the sweet spot: summer heat gone, school crowds gone, and you can swing a hammer in sweater weather. If a diamond dig has been on your list all summer, this is the month to actually do it.

After Labor Day, Cooperstown exhales.
