1. Above-Ground Surface Mining The above-ground surface mines give visitors the unique opportunity to search for Herkimer Diamond quartz crystals hiding in the host rock. These 500-million-year-old treasures are naturally faceted with 18 distinct faces and two points. Most miners prefer to use a hammer to reveal the crystals hidden inside the dolostone. Everything you find is yours to keep!

2. Discover Gemstones at the Sluice Mining Station Perfect for miners of all ages, sluice mining offers an exciting experience without the heavy lifting. You can purchase a specialized “mining rough” bag and head to the 150-foot water-fed Sluice Station. As you screen away the debris, you’ll discover treasures like fossils, colorful gemstones, or even actual Herkimer Diamonds.
3. Design Custom Jewelry in the Artisan Center After you have collected your finds, turn them into a wearable masterpiece. 2026 SEASON LOGISTICS & HOURS

• Opening Day: Sunday, April 12, 2026
• Closing Day: October 31, 2026
• Mining Registration: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST (7 Days a week)
• Trading Post & Retail: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Extended to 6:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays in July and August)
• Weekly Rotation: For those mining for more than one week at a time, the resort requires a weekly rotation to a different area to ensure fresh ground for everyone.
• Weather Policy: The mines are subject to closure during unsafe weather conditions, such as snow, sleet, harsh rains, or thunderstorms.

What exactly is a Herkimer Diamond?

They are naturally faceted quartz crystals with 18 facets and two points. They began forming half a billion years ago in “vugs” (pockets) within dolostone rock. While a real diamond is a 10 on the hardness scale, Herkimers are a 7.5—making them incredibly durable.

What should I bring? Closed-toe shoes are mandatory.

We suggest safety eyewear, gloves, and a 5-gallon bucket for your finds. You can bring your own gear (hammers up to 12 lbs, chisels, screens), but powered equipment is strictly prohibited.

The “Pocket” Secret: Look for rocks with a “pockmarked” or “swiss cheese” appearance. These cavities (vugs) are where the largest crystals grow. If you hear a “hollow” ring when tapping a rock with your hammer, a pocket is likely nearby!

The Rain Advantage: The mines operate in the rain. Water washes away dust, making “water-clear” floaters sparkle on the surface—meaning you can find gems without even swinging a hammer!
