What’s Happening in Central New York in November 2026
November in Central New York is the underrated quiet stretch. The foliage chaos of October is over, the holiday season has not fully started, and the air is genuinely cold. If you like a quieter inn, a slower breakfast, and the kind of small-town November that does not exist near a big city, this is your month. Here is what is actually on the calendar around Little Falls, Herkimer, and Cooperstown in November 2026.
Herkimer County Arts & Crafts Fair: Saturday, November 7
The biggest single day on the local November calendar, and it is ten minutes from our front door. The Arts & Crafts Fair of the Mohawk Valley takes over the Robert McLaughlin College Center at Herkimer County Community College (100 Reservoir Road, Herkimer) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with more than 100 juried vendors: pottery, woodworking, textiles, jewelry, soaps, gourmet foods, and paintings. It is a genuine head start on holiday shopping, and it is the kind of thing people drive two hours for. If you are coming from out of the area, Friday night is the smart arrival: get in, sleep, and be at the doors when they open. Rooms for that Saturday go earlier than people expect. Full details are in our craft fair weekend guide.
Veterans Day in Little Falls: Wednesday, November 11
The Little Falls American Legion and VFW hold the annual Veterans Day service at Ward Square / Eastern Park on East Main Street from 11 a.m. to noon. It is short, it is outdoors, and it is one of those small-city civic moments that tells you a lot about a place in twenty minutes. Dress warmly and stay for lunch downtown afterward.
Early November: the in-between stretch
The first two weeks of November are genuinely quiet. Foliage is past peak, the holiday rush has not started, and the trail and the lake are empty. If what you want is time to read on the porch, walk historic downtown Herkimer in cold quiet, or take a slow drive without trying to see a specific thing, early November is for you. It is also the cheapest, easiest time all year to get the room you actually want. Our Little Falls travel guide works just as well in a wool coat.
Hunting season and the November rhythm
Late November changes the mood around here. New York’s Southern Zone regular firearms season for deer traditionally opens the Saturday before Thanksgiving, which falls on November 21 in 2026, so confirm current dates with NYSDEC before you plan around them. What that means for a visitor is simple: expect blaze orange in the diners, earlier breakfasts, and a very different crowd on back roads. We are used to early risers, and all four of our rooms welcome dogs.
Glimmer Nights returns to Cooperstown
The big anchor for late November is Glimmer Nights at Fenimore Farm & Country Village (the museum formerly known as The Farmers’ Museum) in Cooperstown. The 2026 season runs Saturday, November 21 through Sunday, December 27, Thursday to Sunday evenings only (closed on holidays), with entry from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for teens, $5 for children 7 to 12, and free under 7. The first weekend of the season is normally the easiest to get into. Pair it with dinner before the show and you have a perfect winter Friday or Saturday. One note for guests traveling with a dog: the grounds do not admit pets (service animals only).
The big Utica weekend: November 20 to 22
The busiest weekend of the month is twenty minutes west in Utica, and it is the one where staying over makes the most sense. Jeff Dunham plays The Stanley Theatre on Friday, November 20, at 7 p.m. On Saturday, November 21, The New York Bee Gees are at The Stanley at 7 p.m., and The Brother Brothers play the Sinnott Auditorium at the Munson at 7:30 p.m. The same Saturday, the Ziyara Shriners FEZtival of Trees opens at the Masonic Care Community. It is free and runs through November 29 (closed Thanksgiving Day).
On Sunday, November 22, the Polar Express begins its season from Utica’s Union Station. November trains leave at 4:30 and 7 p.m.; the 1:30 p.m. train runs only on select December weekends. Coach is $47 for adults and $39 for children, and first class is $68 and $58. Like Glimmer Nights, the train admits service animals only.
Two evening shows in one town is a night nobody wants to drive home from. Book Friday and Saturday together and the whole weekend works.
Thanksgiving weekend and the Turkey Trot
Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. The long weekend, Wednesday through Sunday, is one of our busier non-summer stretches: families visit for the holiday and pair it with Cooperstown day trips, Glimmer Nights, or just a slow weekend at the inn.
If you want to earn your dinner, the Little Falls Turkey Trot 5K goes off Thanksgiving morning at 8:30 a.m. from the Little Falls Youth and Family Center at 15 Jackson Street, on a course that runs through Moreland Park and downtown. It is a real hill town, so it is a real 5K. Registration is $28.50, or $5 for runners under 16.
The rest of the weekend fills in nicely: the FEZtival of Trees in Utica runs through Sunday, the Village of Clinton holds its Shoppers’ Stroll and Holiday Parade on Friday and Saturday, November 27 and 28, and the Polar Express season is under way (check the railroad’s schedule for exact departures).
Reservations for Thanksgiving weekend itself fill out by early November. Do not wait on that one.
Small Business Saturday: November 28
The Saturday after Thanksgiving is when downtown Little Falls is at its best. Main Street’s antique dealers, makers, and independent shops all lean into it, and Canal Place is walkable in an afternoon even in the cold. Our guide to antiques shopping in Little Falls is the map for the day. Combine it with an early dinner from our restaurant roundup and you have the whole Saturday handled without getting in the car.
Cooperstown after the season
The National Baseball Hall of Fame is open year-round but much quieter in November. Most other Cooperstown attractions, including Glimmerglass State Park and several smaller museums, run reduced winter hours, so call ahead for anything specific. The Fenimore Art Museum stays open Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., through December, so a cold November afternoon still has a good answer. Our Cooperstown weekend itinerary applies in modified form: pick your top one or two stops and skip the rest.
Cycling season ends
The Erie Canalway Trail is technically open year-round, but riding it in November means cold mornings, short days, and the real possibility of early snow. The committed still do it. Most people defer until spring, and we hold our bicycle rentals for the warmer months.
What to pack for November
Real layers. November in Central New York runs from 30°F mornings to 50°F afternoons in a typical year, and the wind through the Mohawk Valley makes it feel colder than the number. A warm jacket, a hat, and waterproof shoes cover most outdoor plans. The inn has fireplaces and hot chocolate at the ready, and homemade breakfast is arranged with you at check-in, which is worth sorting out the night before if you have an early start planned.
Thinking ahead to summer: Glimmerglass 2027 tickets
November is when the Glimmerglass Festival puts its single tickets on sale, on November 2. The 2027 season runs July 12 to August 22 in Cooperstown, with Into the Woods, The Barber of Seville, Rusalka and The Little Prince. Our Glimmerglass Festival 2027 guide has every performance date, which ones are matinees, and how the festival’s ticket packages work.
Booking advice for November 2026
Three dates carry the month: Saturday November 7 for the craft fair, Thanksgiving week from November 25 to 29, and the Glimmer Nights opening weekend. Those are the ones worth booking early. Everything else in November is wide open, which is exactly the appeal.
