Visiting Little Falls NY: A Mohawk Valley Travel Guide

Little Falls, New York is one of the Mohawk Valley’s most charming small towns, a former mill and canal community that’s become a quietly excellent weekend destination. If you’re planning a visit, here’s the guide.

Why Visit Little Falls

Little Falls sits along the Mohawk River and the historic Erie Canal, about a 20-minute drive east of Herkimer. It’s a town of about 5,000 people with a disproportionate amount of interesting things to do: a historic Canal Place district with restored mill buildings now housing inns, shops, and cafes; the famous Beardslee Castle a short drive north; the Erie Canalway Trail running directly through town; and a growing arts and food scene that punches above the town’s weight class.

Beardslee Castle

The single most distinctive destination in the Little Falls area. Beardslee Castle hosts weddings, special events, and dining in a stone-and-timber estate setting. Even if you’re not attending an event, the dining experience is worth a special trip. Reservations are essential, particularly on summer weekends, which book up months in advance for weddings.

Historic Canal Place

The Canal Place district sits along the Mohawk River, anchored by the restored Stone Mill complex and the Canal Side Inn buildings. It’s the historic core of the town, and worth a wander: antique shops, the Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, a small cafe at Stone Mill, and several locally-owned restaurants. The river views are particularly nice in late spring and early fall.

Antique Shops and the Canal Place Antique District

Little Falls is one of the most concentrated antiquing destinations in upstate New York, and the action centers on two main shops within walking distance of each other.

Little Falls Antique Center at 25 West Mill Street occupies the 1855 Ligneous Paper Mill on the bank of the Mohawk River. More than 40 dealers under one roof carry everything from primitives and country furniture to estate jewelry, advertising signs, vintage glass, and ephemera. Typical hours are Monday and Wednesday through Sunday, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, closed Tuesdays.

Showcase Antiques at 375 Canal Place is a former machine shop converted into a single-floor showroom representing 80+ dealers, leaning toward primitives, country, and traditional Americana. Typically open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday through Sunday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, closed Wednesdays.

Between the two shops plus The Shops at 25 West upstairs in the same mill building, the Canal Place antique district has 100+ active dealers, easily a full day for collectors. For the in-depth planner including parking, accessibility, and dealer mix, see our guide to antiques shopping in Little Falls NY.

Erie Canalway Trail

Little Falls is on the Erie Canalway Trail, the multi-state bike trail that follows the historic canal. Cyclists can ride east toward Albany or west through Herkimer toward Utica. Day rides are common; multi-day cycling trips along the canal are growing in popularity. For lodging strategy specifically for canal cyclists, see our Erie Canalway Trail lodging guide.

Moss Island and Erie Canal Lock 17

Across the canal from Canal Place sits Moss Island, a small National Natural Landmark famous for its glacier-carved potholes, some up to 40 feet deep. The island draws geology enthusiasts, hikers, and rock climbers from across the Northeast. Trails wrap around the formations and you can scramble up to overlook viewpoints over the Mohawk River.

Right next to Moss Island is Erie Canal Lock 17, one of the highest-lift locks in the state. Watching a boat lock through is a quintessentially Mohawk Valley experience. There is a small viewing area near the lock, and the walk from Canal Place to Moss Island to Lock 17 makes a perfect half-day outing on foot.

Restaurants and Local Food

Little Falls has more food than its size suggests. Ann Street Restaurant & Deli is a beloved local breakfast and lunch spot. That Little Place on Main covers contemporary American. Trattoria Giorgio handles Italian. Several pizza places. The cafe at Stone Mill (in the historic mill complex) does coffee, sandwiches, and ice cream. For a special-occasion dinner, Beardslee Castle’s dining room is the splurge option.

Mohawk Valley Wineries

The Mohawk Valley is an emerging wine region, with several small producers within a short drive of Little Falls. Most are open seasonally for tastings. For a structured tour plus lodging, see our Mohawk Valley wineries page.

Annual Festivals: Garlic and Cheese

Two annual events have made Little Falls a destination for food-focused day-trippers from across Central New York and beyond. If your visit lines up with either, plan ahead, these draw crowds.

Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival, Held each September at Canal Place. The 2026 edition runs Saturday, September 12. Vendors sell fresh garlic, garlic-themed products, herbs, prepared foods, and crafts. Live music, demos, and a Bloody Mary garden round it out. A long-running event with twenty-plus years of history.

Little Falls Cheese Festival, Held the first Saturday in October along five blocks of Main Street. The 2026 festival is Saturday, October 3. More than 120 cheeses from upstate New York cheesemakers, plus craft cider, wine, and artisanal spirits. Billed as the biggest festival of its kind in New York.

Both festivals fill the local lodging fast. If you are coming for either, plan your stay early, see our Lodging Near Little Falls page for room availability.

The Little Falls Historical Society Museum

For visitors interested in the canal era and Mohawk Valley history, the Little Falls Historical Society Museum is worth an afternoon. The town’s history as a 19th-century industrial center along the Erie Canal shaped much of what’s standing today.

Where to Stay

For lodging within a 10-15 minute drive of Little Falls, Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast in Herkimer is the natural base. Four guest rooms each with a private bath, all pet-friendly, full hot homemade breakfast each morning, and a quiet residential setting on Route 5. For the full overview of how we fit a Little Falls visit, see our Lodging Near Little Falls page.

When to Visit

Late May through mid-October is the most active visiting season, the Erie Canalway Trail is fully open, restaurants and shops are running their longer hours, and the Canal Place outdoor seating is pleasant. October brings fall foliage to the Mohawk Valley hillsides. Winter is quieter, most outdoor attractions slow down, but Beardslee Castle and the indoor venues stay open. Snowmobilers heading to area trails sometimes base out of Herkimer; see our snowmobile lodging guide for that.

Planning Your Trip

For a one-day visit: park in Canal Place, walk the historic district, lunch at one of the local cafes, then drive to Beardslee Castle for a late afternoon visit. For a weekend: add a day in Cooperstown (30 minutes south) or a Mohawk Valley wineries tour. For multi-day cycling trips: Little Falls is a natural eastern stop on the Erie Canalway route.

If you’re staying overnight, see our Lodging Near Little Falls NY page for context on the options, or book a room at Grand Colonial directly.
